Bengaluru Airport awarded excellence in water management tag


Bangalore International Airport Ltd. (BIAL) has announced that it has won the prestigious Water Award for outstanding work in water management and sustainability at the three-day Bangalore World Water Summit 2012 held at Hotel Lalit Ashok recently.

The award was presented to Hari Kumar- Vice President, Engineering & Maintenance, BIAL by Governor of Karnataka, Dr. H.R Bhardwaj.

BIAL was shortlisted for the award after a rigorous screening process led by a panel of experts including industry leaders from across disciplines under the chairmanship of former Chief Justice of India Dr. Rajendra Babu.

This marks the second award for BIAL in the last three months where the company’s efforts in water management and sustainability have been recognized and acknowledged. The company had recently won the 8th Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) National Award for Excellence in Water Management.

Instituted by the Centre for Sustainable Development (CSD), this award for Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) is recognition of its consistent efforts towards improving and sustaining water resources. The objective of the award scheme is to recognize and award ‘Excellence’in Water Management in industries and facilitate sharing of information by water-efficient companies.

The award was evaluated on criterion such as implementation of water saving projects, reduction in specific water consumption and water discharge for three years, water monitoring & reporting systems, adherence to best practice, certifications, per capita consumption of water, monitoring carbon footprints through drives against ground and surface water pollution and creation of awareness about water conservation with its stakeholders.

The award was presented at the Bangalore World Water Summit 2012 that witnessed participation from some of the greatest minds in the area of water, including researchers, technocrats, policy makers, solutions-providers, industry bodies and consultants from across the globe  at the three-day summit.

Bengaluru International Airport has been applauded for its maintenance practices used to reduce water consumption. Water equipment and systems like flow controllers and overflow restrictors, sensor enabled hand wash & flushing system, imported Mechanical Runway Sweeper (MRS) for runway cleaning and ride-on scrubber drier for floor cleaning help control water consumption along with a very effective rain-water harvesting unit, which is also in the aid of water conservation at the airport. Bengaluru International Airport has a well-defined water policy which believes in involving its employees in the water conservation efforts.
